Preventing refrigerator fire on Norcold 1210

We have a 3 1/2 year old Norcold 1210 refrigerator. It works fine but I am concerned about all the refrigerator fires I hear about.

Would I solve the fire issue if we had a someone cap off the propane to the refrigerator and use it only on electric?

We have considered replacing it with a residential refrigerator, but cannot locate one that is only 64 inches tall that would fit in the compartment space we have.

  • Were they still having problems 3 1/2 years ago? Mt Dometic had the fix shield but its 14 years old. Did you check your serial number?
  • The fire can start from the Hydrogen cap that is on the cooling medium. It creates an inert atmosphere retarding corrosion and also hydrogen is the best gas for cooling. When the cooling unit tubing cracks and the hydrogen escapes the fire can start. If the unit is on propane and the failure occurs the flame from the propane can light things off in a hurry. It is a little better if the unit is on electricity, but fire can still breakout.

What year, if any, can we stop worrying about Norcold causing fires?

Have they ever fixed the problem?

I ask because I am considering a 2015 model trailer with a Norcold.

No, it has NOT been fixed. Norcold is still using the bandaid and the fires are still happening. There is NO way I would have a Norcold 12xx in any RV I own, even with the ARP bandaid.
  • Some people have added an automatic Halon extinguisher.
The distributor that sells the Amish CU sells them.

  • "All the refrigerator fires"?

I wasn't aware there was an epidemic of them. I've heard of a few every once in a while, all of which were posted on here. Other than that I wasn't aware that it was a widespread problem.

The refer in a rig across from me on electric caught fire so that will not solve the problem. Even though I now have a Amish cooling unit in mine, I left the auto fire system, a smoke alarm, and even Revision E of the NoCold bandaid (which I know how to bypass when it fails). I recently installed a ARP controller for added protection. I would spend the $100 on the ARP and a smoke alarm.
Those that say it's not a problem have not seen all of the burnt rigs in the salvage yards I visit. I can tell a burnt 1200 from 150' away by the cooling fin layout.
I wonder where this fire started?
