Thanks now that I know what to look for I see the little pop up thingmager is red on one tank and green on one .

It will be cheaper to go get another tank and a switchover valve .

I like that grill gauge.. looks like it will be easier to use than hauling the bathroom scales outside and balancing the cylinder on the scales. I bet with a little thought and calculations, you could mark empty, 1/4 full and maybe even 1/2 full for 30lb on the gauge.

For my 20# propane tank (4.7 gallons US) I use a Grill Gauge. I don't know why it isn't offered for any other tank sizes, but it works like a charm. I use the external propane bottle via a Stay-A-While adapter 95% of the time. Even with the tank connected to the MH, I hook the Grill Gauge on it and lift it a couple of inches to find out how much is left in the tank.

When i think it's getting close to empty, i boil some water & pour over the tank. After that, you can feel a definite cold line on the tank. That's the level of propane left. Simple, but it would be nice if there was a better way!

How do you tell when it switches over do you just leave one tank off or is there a way to tell?

I will discuss several gauges.

1: Pressure gauge: This says "You got Propane/You are empty" there is very very very little warning.

2: Magnetic or adheasive stick on LCD color strips, these actually work fairly well, using the gas stove boil a pan of water and dump it over the gauge, you should see a clear color line, that's your propane level.

3: Built in float gauge.. THIS has to be built into the tank, Of course if it is not done properly it does not work properly.

4: Scale. Yup, a scale you weigh the tank.

There is a company that makes a simple spring scale that mounts under the tank.

I know, found it while searching today about those Lite composite LP tanks - I'm looking at ways to reduce my TT's tongue weight and through your reply I though I found something interesting... guess I still need to look around some more. There are other manufacturers out there.
