Really intrigued to find this many responses in so little time.
Sir, you posted a five paragraph manifesto about how a child on a bicycle consumed your entire weekend on a camping trip that you didn't want to take anyway.
Were you honestly expecting everyone to agree with you?
I think most of us are just shocked that such a trivial encounter threw your whole vacation into a frenzy. The real telling reaction here is that of your "astute" kids. My kids would have probably unhitched their bikes and been off exploring with their "new friend". Your kids rolled their eyes, which is behavior they likely learned from their parents.
Do us all a favor and keep everyone informed where you will be camping so the rest of us know to stay away and not bother you with such trivial things as small talk. You were setting up a campsite which takes about as much intellect as plugging in a vacuum cleaner, yet you act as if you were preparing the Space Shuttle for launch and couldn't be bothered by a couple innocent questions from a kid.
I'd be willing to bet the entire encounter with this kid took less time than you spent describing it to us.
