question for owners of Blue Ox Swaypro

Hi Everyone,

i've just ordered a Blue Ox Sway Pro and have a question for anyone that has set it up themselves.

Do you need a deep well socket to install the ball, or will a standard socket suffice? From the pictures I've seen, it looks like the nut is deeply recessed within the hitch head.

Thanks!

  • I think you are more likely to slip off the head with a socket, than with the included handle because the head is so short, and a socket will apply a small outward force compared to the stock handle which applies rotation more online with the head (by head, I mean the hex part you put the handle over)
  • Thanks for all of the help..one more newbie question.

I don't really like the wrench that is used to rotate the brackets when hooking up the trailer and thought I'd use a short breaker bar instead. Can someone check what size socket fits onto the rotating brackets and let me know? I'd check myself of course, but my rig is in storage right now and I'd like to get the right size socket before I head back to the storage lot.

    Thanks!
  • Thanks for the reply. Do you think a thin walled socket is needed, or will a standard thickness deep impact socket work?
  • Also, it you have a Class-5 receiver, you may have to spend some time with a grinder to add the proper chamfer to edges of the hitch shank.
  • Yes you need a deep socket. You'll probably have to dig into an impact set to find one deep enough in that size.

BTW - that was one of the features that persuaded me towards that hitch. The deeply recessed gal shank means it won't bind up with the WD bars during sharp turns. That was the one real problem I had with my Reese Dual Cam (and when the outer bar bound up, the inner bar simply dropped out.... this can't happen with the Blue Ox).
