Question on on the go water softener?

Purchased one of these about 2 years ago. They do work and do stop the water deposits. However it is a pain in the neck to service. Biggest problem once I go through all the mantaince then the cap will leak. I use vaseline on the o ring thats mounted in the lid, and most of the time it takes several tries to get it to seal. The only way to add salt is to turn it over and let it slowly let water out,, so there is room for the salt. the unit is about 22 inches tall, and is heavy to mess with. Main answer what needs to be done to make the top lid quit leaking. Teflon tape does not work. maybe sit needs a larger O ring, or at least a new one. These problems have existed since day one.

  • Thanks, I do agree I need a new o ring. I've looked in town and have not found oe as yet. I'll call them and see what I can find out.
I like the idea of putting the salt a full house filter. Very good idea.
  • I've used mine for over 6 yrs.

I don't use any 'stuff' on O-ring. You need a new one.

I just slowly pour the salt in and let the water overflow as the salt displaces it....like the instructions show.

Although it has a 1 yr. warranty, contact On The Go, tell them your issue and they might just send you a new O-ring

  • If opening and closing the softener is a hassle another way to deal with it is to install something like this ( whole house filter ).

You put the filter on the input side of the water softener. When it is time to regenerate you put the salt in the filter housing then invert it and run water thru the filter into the softener until the salt is gone. Run water for and additional 15 minutes or so to rinse the softener and it's good to go. You can use any type of salt, regular softener pellets, table salt, ice cream salt, they will all work.

I use the quick disconnect fittings on the hose ends. Less trouble with leaks and to me more convenient.

If you need some lubricant for the O-ring I would use plumbers silicone.

    Good luck.
  • The brand of this water softener is On the Go. Cannot find a model number but it is 22 inches tall, and 9 inches diameter. I'm going to get a new O ring. This problem has existed since day 1.
  • Your problem is the Vaseline makes o-rings change size. Go to the hardware store and get the right size o-ring and don't use petroleum based lubricants on it and you will be fine.
  • Can you identify the manufacturer, make and model?
Definitely replace the O ring. Have you tried Anti-Seize or Never-Seez lubricants? :)
