Do be aware that some places out west, the ravens have learned there are tasty morsels in those sewer hoses, and they will peck holes in 'em to get the goodies. Trailer Village at the Grand Canyon goes to the trouble of warning campers not to leave sewer hoses out, lest the be destroyed that way.
I, too, went for years without one. If you aren't going to stay for a while, if your routine is to put the hose out, dump, and roll it back into storage, you don't need one. But I finally bought one on sale last year, and it came in handy when I volunteered as camp host back in May. But we didn't have a raven problem, just a bear problem, and they never bothered the sewer hoses.
But boy were they heck on picnic baskets.
