Questions about selling our motorhome

Our kids are getting older and are in more activities now. So, we don't use our motorhome as much as we used to. It was a very tough decision, but we are selling our RV. We have it listed at a couple of websites.

Do potential buyers usually want to do a test drive? How is payment and the transfer of title usually done? Is it like a car and you just go to a title place? Do you accept a cashier's check? How do you know if it's a good check?

Any tips or suggestions on selling our beloved RV?

Thanks!

  • Thanks so much for all of the advice! I really appreciate it.
  • Never send anyone off with your stuff unless you transfer the money in the bank. Only then will you know the account is legal and the money is there for the transfer to complete.

It it's in their bank, get their bank to give you a bank check for the money, if it's in yours, get them to certify the holdings before you sign.

And, if they have no RV experience driving a rig, take a deposit that says any test drives bring it back in the same condition.
  • Ditto on the wire transfer.

Cashiers checks are now being counterfeited at an alarming rate and most banks will no longer except them. Been there done that I received one but managed to stop it in time before they charged 'my' account with the amount. :(
  • Yes, buyers will want to test drive in our experiences.
When we sell high dollar items, we have the transaction done at either our bank, or the purchasers bank.
At our bank, it is done by wire transfer, from their bank to ours. Once the transfer is complete, our bank notarizes the title and transaction is complete. At their bank, we have been there to have the cashier hand us a certified check, and that bank notarizes the title. Transaction complete.
Either way, we have a bill of sale made out with 2 copies. One for them, one for us with signatures. Take off the plates ( in AZ ) and go home and do DMV paperwork, and cancel insurance.

    Good luck with your sale.
