This is what happened with my husband, too. He passed away four years ago.
I can't advise the OP but if his wife is healthy and independent and really doesn't mind his going, he might consider taking the trip alone. After my husband died I drove to AK alone and thoroughly enjoyed it. He would not have like it at all.
