Re-Attaching In-Channel Window Rain Guards?

Dually has 8-10yo aftermarket plastic in-channel rain guards that are barely hanging on. What, if anything, can be done to re-attach them?
  • Maybe try a thin double sided tape on the outside upper edge. Should take care of the problem, but needs to be thin.
  • there is so many wonderful adhesives out there i would stop by a auto body shop and see what they recommend.
  • It could be that your rain guards have either lost their spring like tension fit or they were taped in and the adhesive failed. If the tape failed you'll need to clean off the old tape and adhesive with a plastic scraper and rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol if it won't harm the paint. I'd recommend the 1/2 inch with 3m auto body tape and trimming it to fit.

Some of these are made to fit by flexing them and inserting them into place. Some have the dark grey/black auto body with red peal off backing like the 3M tape. Either type fit between the the gasket and metal door window frame.

Mine for my 2003 Silverado came with strips of tape with peel off strips on both sides. The instructions called for placing the tape on the outer edge of the guards after peeling off one side of the protective film, then placing the top rear edge in place after peeling about an inch of the second side of protective film down and flexing the guard to get it into place. Once lined up and in place the second side of protective film is pulled off and the guard is pressed against the window frame as the tape backing is pulled.

Instead of using the tape I was able to flex mine into the channel of the gasket where the window seats when rolled up. When the window is up the window is against the flange of the back side of the guard. After 14 years the right door rain guard is still snug enough in place. However for 12 years the truck was parked at home facing west. The sun damaged the left side and it crumbled about 2 years ago. I tried to buy new ones at that time and AVS (Auto Vent Shade) changed the design to do away with the the bottom 6 inches that went down to the bottom of the window opening. I found out after ordering new ones that new stlye can only be taped in place so I returned them.

I recently found that Weather Guard may have one like the old style AVS that doesn't need taping. Installation instructions on their web site for both written and video only mention tape for the rear side windows. I'm going to verify they are like my original before ordering.
  • I bought mine at a truck accessory store and you might check Edith them and see if they caan help. There are a Lot of brands out there. I have in channel now and if I have to replace the tape I will probably just replace with new ones that mount outside. I had one blow off while driving right rear door and it luckily blew into the truck while driving. I don't used the rear ones much so I haven't done anything with it yet.
