Assuming you have an awning like this. You pull down on the loswest horizonal bar to lower that side. You do not have to straighten it back to close the awning. The bar will straighten itself. However, the motors on the awnings are not that powerfull and it could lead to the gears stripping. So, I would make it a habit to just straighten it before retracting the awning.
