I’ve towed a 2000 4Runner and am now towing a 2008 4Runner. Pretty much the same drive train as your Taco. I’ve used a driveshaft disconnect on both of them. FYI, I don’t use the shifter linkage for the disconnect, I just lay down and reach under to connect/disconnect it by hand.
