My trailer is 3000 dry, but we have a ton in it. Our gears are 3.42. So I have a few slight advantages over your situation. I wish I had more truck, but I'm really proud of what it does for what it is. We tow through the Appalacians often, and I can pull long 6% grades in third gear at about 50mph and 2800rpm. I'm surprised it's so different from your experience.
