Rear Camera??

I would like some information about the preferences for back up camera's. My need is to put a camera on the rear of my 5th wheel and obviously the monitor in the cab. I will not be removing the camera from the rear of the trailer for any other use.

Knowing there are several different setups out there was wondering what the preferred types were.

Thanks for your info.
  • dont know if you got one already, but costco has a good one online, i think i was about the same as a few people listed before. maybe a little cheaper at costco but the best part is you can not beat costco's return policy if you are ever unhappy with it. i hope to get one sometime soon for my toy hauler. this one also had a disconnect, it is made for trailers.
  • I bought a factory refurbished unit. So far, so good. Running a cable from the back of the camper with a disconnect coupling at the hitch and finding a hole in the truck for the wire was more than I wanted to tackle.

Note the HUGE coupling plug for just two wires. Also note the grommet on the wire.

The 3/4" grommet doesn't fit the 1" hole.

Needs a washer to fit the grommet.

The close quarters of the panel behind the outside plate prevented the huge plug from turning the corner.

Had to slip the washer up the line to get the plug behind the outside wall. If I had it to do over, I would cut off the huge plug. But I wasn't sure the camera would work, and I knew cutting the plug would make it non-returnable.

Edit: Update: Tim at rvcams.com says cutting the exterior sheath on the cable provides a path for water vapor to get into the camera. So don't do it!

  • Check Camera-Source.com. They have wired and wireless cameras available with and without the monitor. I bought their Salt Spreader/Camper camera kit as I did not need a monitor. Quality product and good image.
  • Garmin now has a few of their GPS units that will double as a backup camera. 58LM as I recall is one of them and a very good GPS.

Isn't the middle red light required by law?
