Reasonable Trade Expectation?

People often pay too much when they buy new. You should be able to get 30-35% their "list" price when you buy. Then after paying too much they finance them forever and are upside down for years on the loan. When trading it in the dealer knows this and they will show you an inflated trade in price off of a full list price for the new unit. So you think they are giving you a super deal. Do your own numbers. Take 30% off the price for the new one then don't expect to get more than wholesale out of your trade. The only number that matters is how much you pay along with your trade...

You'll get wholesale for your trade.

No dealer will pay more than wholesale.

They may write up the paperwork showing retail or even more for your trade but that is against full MSRP for the new RV.

Tell the dealer you'll be selling the old trailer outright or giving it to your kids. Then, get the best price you can on the new trailer. Look disappointed at the price, say you can't afford that and you'll just keep the old one. Walk away. When the dealer comes running after you, get them to give you a good price on the trade in.

Searh RVtrader for the model your trading in to see what they are selling for. This will give you an idea of what your dealer will resell yours for. Have them give you a quote and then meet somewhere in the middle.

Did you look up the NADA price on your TT? wouldn't expect more then low retail, probably well below it. Then figure 25% or so off the full advertised price on the FW.

If they want to make the sale bad enough you "may" be able to approach something less than a grab your ankles trade in price. Negotiate the cash price of the rig you want first, do not even mention a trade. Also, if it is a large dealer try negotiating on the last day of the month, preferably in the afternoon. They will have, in all probability made their nut for the month and anything else they move by the end of the business day generates cash back from the corporate office.

After being offered $4,500 in trade for our 22' TT I told them no but called them out on the above scenario (it was July 31st). I asked the sales manager (at La Mesa RV), to tell me I was wrong and he declined to do so. Told him I would buy the Class C that we had already negotiated a good cash price on but only with a fair value on the trade.

They balked and we walked {out of the little office, they hate it when you do that}, and stood by our truck for a few minutes. My wife asked "What happens now?" and I replied "Wait for it."

About 5 minutes later they had "made a few calls" and found a buyer for our TT and upped the trade in to $8,500 (which is what I had it consigned for at another dealer.)

We made the deal and believe me they made money, but we got exactly what we
wanted. It worked for us and just might for you. Remember... From sex to sales, nothing beats asking. It is free with just two possible answers (only one of which is bad). You don't ask, you don't get.

You should negotiate the cost of the new RV and your trade-in separately so you'll you know where they are going to nail you. And they will nail you. Good luck!
