It can be done, but not without lifting the trailer tongue to release the pressure on the bars. And it is finicky to do and to re-hitch. I tried it once and found it to be more of a pain than it's worth. Plus I like having the hitch in at all times to solve the tailgating issues I get. Been rear-ended lightly twice and never any damage to the truck, but a couple holes punched in the offending vehicle.
