I actually saw someone, do just what the salesman said to do. It was a disaster to say the least. The family pulled into the site next to us last year with their brand new TT. Everyone bailed out of the TV (Chevy2500) and started to get the TT setup. Had all the stabilizers set so the TT was level. The TT was still attached to the TV with the WD bars still attached. The guy went to the back of the TV and was able to pull the pin from the receiver with a little help from a hammer. Got into the driver's set, put the truck in gear and pulled forward. Here where things went wrong. The hitch came out of the receiver with such force that the TT lurched forward and off the stabilizers, the hitch slammed into the ground. The truck lurched up, scared the driver who hit the gas and went across the road and t-boned the TV parked across from them. One hell of a way to start a weekend camp out. The folks next to us on the other side got a video of the aftermath, but I have no idea as to what happened to the video. Fortunately no one was hurt, only psychical damage to the 2 TV's and TT.
That's scary stuff. It's ashame some folks just don't know any better. As to unhooking using the method explained by the op, not smart. Lots of things that could go wrong and I wouldn't want my bars and hitch head out in the elements anyway.
I'm surprised by the number of people at the cg who i see just lay the bars and head on the ground under the a frame. Again i suppose they don't know any better or are not concerned with theft?
This Makes me feel very fortunate i had a great dad who took us camping and explained the hooking/ unhooking procedure to me from a very young age and had me help and took the time to answer my questions. I miss him, that's for sure.
He went home to be with the Lord on 8/2/2000, but I'm glad i had him as long as I did. A lot of folks are not as fortunate.
