Rent your RV as opposed to paying for storage?

Unsure where to post this question. Does anyone have experience renting out their RV? We are looking to store a travel trailer (small and lightweight with good rental potential) but are looking into the possibility of storing it for free with a dealer that rents out RVs. I think he said the rental revenue gets split 50/50 between him and the RV owner. Insurance is included.

Other than the wear and tear, does anyone here have experiences / thoughts about renting out their RV?

  • I've never done it, but I feel that my RV is too fragile to let someone else who doesn't know all its foibles borrow/rent it.

Honestly, I think paying storage is cheaper in the long run. :)

  • Fear of the unknown would dissuade me. Renters could bring bedbugs, incontinent kids or animals. They could decide to fry chicken or boil cabbage. I know folks love their dogs but I don't want to put my head on a cushion they've been using as a butt scratcher. Too many potential downsides.
  • If you don't mind a stranger/kids putting who knows wbat in your black tank, the potential for stains/rips/damage and the possibility of bedbugs, it's a great idea.
The dealer splits the revenue 50/50. Will they split the repairs 50/50?
Check with your insurance company, they may have a problem even if the dealer provides rental insurance.
  • way back I rented out my winnie ,been there never again. stored don,t rent it ,
  • I have three thoughts:
    trouble, trouble, and trouble..

Not for me for a lot more than 3 reasons.
But, if you decide to do it...good luck with it and please post back with a report on how it worked out...
  • My biggest issue is not everyone has the same health standards. One of the reasons I have an RV is I know who slept in my bed last night. The other is it's not mine so what if it bounced over that last curb, something got spilled, I burned x on the stove, kids pulled the blind off, dog couldn't hold all night. For me, I'd pay to store.
  • No experience, but plenty of thoughts.

My first thought is I flat don't want anyone I don't know using my RV. Just picky that way I guess.

Secondly, I doubt very seriously anyone who rents my RV will take care of it the way I do, then I have to deal with the aftermath.

I think after the first or second time it's was rented, I wouldn't want to use it anymore. My RV is three years old this Feb, and it's like brand new. I don't see that happening as a rental.

Dealer says they have insurance, but if you are financing the rig, will their insurance cover it if it's totaled? Does the lender have a say in this (Terms and Conditions)?

It all sounds good until next spring when you want to use YOUR trailer, and you need to spend money and time to get it back in the condition YOU want it to be.
