Replace Cooktop With Unit With Oven

Has anyone replaced their cooktop with a Oven unit? It was a option with my rig but it did not come with one. I realize there will be some cabinet modification... Would like feedback from anybody that has actually done it..
  • We wanted an oven (we had owned truck campers in the past that had them) . We looked at some without and I checked out if it would be possible to retro fit one if it's an option I bet the cabinet below the cooktop comes out easily. The issue I saw with some non oven rigs was plumbing lines in the way. We found a rig with an oven so didn't have to do the conversion. But I do get the wanting an oven and we use ours a lot
  • Yes, I did it on our 2004 Rockwood 8318SS.

When we bought it new, there was a shortage of RV ovens. I believe it was due to a fire at a Mexican plant that makes the oven controllers. Since they couldn't get ovens, Rockwood installed a cooktop and then put in a convection oven/microwave (Apollo).

However, when we dry camp, we can't use the convection oven (electric powered), so I still wanted the oven. A year after we bought the trailer, the oven shortage was over and I bought a new cooktop/oven.

The installation was easy. The cooktop screwed sideways into the edges of the countertop cutout. The gas connection is under the cooktop cover. Disconnect the gas (flare nut), remove 4 screws and the cooktop slid out. Below the cooktop was a storage cabinet with 2 doors. Since the trailers are made to fit an oven, removing the two doors and the center stile between them opened up the exact amount of room needed for the oven. The oven slid into place, and anchored to the edge of the countertop as before. The screws might not be in the same spot, though. The oven actually overlaps the cutout in the countertop, so it hangs there and you don't have to hold it in place while installing the screws. Hook up the gas connection (it was very close to the same spot in our oven as it was on the cooktop). Test gas for leaks, and you are good to go.

  • We actually carry small home portable oven with us not that we can use. Wife wants a built in says she will use it... Will have to look into the convection/microwave.. Can you cook a pizza in those?
  • I can't directly answer your installation questions but I saw this in the May Motor Home issue:

    New RV Oven/Cooktop

One good feature it has is elec. ignition (no more hands and knees to light the oven). It's all stainless and has a glass windowed door. It's a very high quality unit and I'm sure you'd fan using it. It's slightly wider (19") than the standard 17" Atwwods or other common stoves. Pricey too...$975.00 according to the article.
  • I looked closely at mine before purchase. Looks like an easy mod. Just screws holding in panels below. However, DW likes convection oven so much we never modified ours. Plus now she wants to toss out our present Viking oven in our S&B and get a convection microwave. They will pretty much do everything an oven will do.
  • Sorry cannot give you any pointers about doing a swap like this. All I can say is that with the 2 TTs and now the MH we have used our oven zero times. It is just an area to store cooking pans for us. Have you made good use of an oven in the past to justify this kind of expense and time investment?
