Reservations for extended trips?

It makes me uneasy to go on a trip without having assurance that I'll have a place to stay when I get there. This isn't a big issue as long as I'm just planning a week or two of vacation, but when I retire I plan to stay out longer and would like to be more flexible. Making all reservations ahead for a 2 month trip strains my brain. What do you do?

  • When we want to camp at our favorite campground, reservations are necessary. When we took a cross country trip a few years ago we made reservations for the trip out as we had to be in PA on a particular date. After that we took our chances and were never disappointed. You will awlays find somewhere to camp. That is part of the adventure!
  • We pretty much lay out our travel plans and make reservations at the places we think we want to stay. It takes more homework but it also gets you into the campgrounds you want. We are in our MH 4 mos a year and very seldom just wing it.
  • We are retired with an empty nest. As such, we do nearly all of our travels during the Spring and Fall when the folks with school age kids are stuck at home, which makes it much easier to get campsites. We never make advance reservations for long trips of 6-9 weeks, as we have no idea where we will be after the first few nights. For popular destinations such as Yellowstone, we call ahead a few days to a week ahead to reserve a site. There have been a few rare occasions when we had to make a second phone call.

For us, making reservations for a long trip would spoil the freedom of RVing. We often stop to see some unexpected discovery along the way, decide in the morning to skip a site that we had been thinking of visiting, decide to stay an extra day or leave a day early.

For us, reservations would be a cause of stress, not a relief from stress.
  • Other factors are the size of your RV and what your minimum requirements are for a site. As I get older I find myself making more reservations - maybe I am getting too foo foo.
  • Like the others, we rarely make reservations ahead of time except when we have a specific campground or site preference. In many years of RV'ing we've only run into a "Sorry, we're full." situation twice, and in both cases we were offered a spot to dry camp overnight until a site opened up the next day. Since we rarely know ahead of time exactly how long we'll stay in any one spot, or when we'll get there, making advance reservations would be difficult for us at best.
  • I have no idea what I would like to be doing tomorrow never mind two months from now. We very seldom make reservations, none in the last few years and we're in the TT about 4 or 5 months a year.
  • We never make reservations when we travel in the winter time. We can do that because we have no preference where we stay. If it is a nice place and they have room, we might stay longer like a week. If it is a not nice place, we will be gone the next day.
We have been in AZ, NM, TX, MS, and GA and have always found places to stay. If you are looking for longer stays at specific CGs, then maybe reservations will be necessary.
The only time we had even a hint of an issue was in Yuma AZ. It took about 5 phone calls before we found a place for the night but once we were in, they said we could stay for a week with no problem.
