That bit of wisdom comes from someone who knows that their superior skills will most likely enable them to win the fight in the moment, but that also recognizes that there are consequences in our "modern" society.
I have a plaque in my office.
A SUPERIOR SAILOR is one who uses his SUPERIOR JUDGMENT to keep out of situations requiring the use of his SUPERIOR SKILLS.
In this world, there are some people that don't have the capacity to reason beyond the moment. They don't think about the consequences after their actions, they only think about right now.
You also have people that can't make the connection between their actions and the consequences of their actions. If they do something and then get in trouble for it, it's the fault of the person that pointed it out - not theirs.
You also have some people that just don't care about the consequences.
Sometimes, you have people that fit all three.
It used to be that if you got into a situation with one of these people, that you were considered justified in resolving it. In "modern" society, it's not so black and white. This is especially true if you are one with SUPERIOR SKILLS.
Discretion is indeed the better part of valor. Sometimes, directly asking nicely works. Sometimes it bites you on the backside. Sometimes, going to management is the right thing to do. Sometimes it too bites you on the backside.
Being able to analyze the situation and handle it appropriately is the key.
