Always carry a light at night when you are camping out west.
Out west you always keep an eye on the ground to avoid stepping on a snake, scorpion, tarantula...whatever. Having said that, we have yet to see any of these at our campsite in the past five years of camping in Arizona and California. (I still hope to see a bear some day!)
