Actually that is the best method for log cabins and older buildings that are pegged together. Drill a 1" hole in both timbers and taper one end of the 1" square wooden pg and drive in home with a BFH.
Ok, Back to the OP's problem----------I like the idea of a handle so I would install a larger storage box.
