I use an old copy of Delorme Street Atlas 8.0 to plan my routes. I've used it to plan most of our longer trips, including stops; some trips have been over 5000 miles.
Once I have my mileages and whatnot, I create a spreadsheet with GPS coordinates that I send to my smart phone. I simply click on the coordinates of our next destination, and Google gets me there.
