Rust after trip to Galveston

We had constant blowing sea water on our camper since we had a site backing up to the Gulf. Really caused a lot of rust. Two questions: 1. Is there any protection to keep this from happening besides camping at a campground that is not right on the Gulf? 2. My metal tire chocks are really rusted, especially the treads. How do you remove the rust?
Thanks,
JP

  • How long were you there? We've stayed at the beach for 2 weeks at a time and even had our TT stored at the beach for months and never had an issue.
  • Fluid film is good stuff but not for things you want to keep clean. How about paint?
  • Welcome to the joy of camping next to the Texas Gulf coast. Be happy you're up in Galveston where it isn't as bad as further south. :E

Fluid Film. if you want to do it right, or you can do what I do and use ATF in a dollar store spray bottle. Fluid Film is much cleaner.

Once the damage is done the best you can do is slow it down with Ospho. After that, then paint if you want.
  • Thanks swamprat. To respond to bgum: I understand the formula that results in rust; however, when you are camping for 5 days at an RV park that is right on the Gulf, your solution will not work. We had blowing salt water on our camper and truck for 5 days. A heavy salt film was on everything. Yes, when I immediately got home, I thoroughly washed both the truck and my camper.
My wife loves to take the Grandkids to the beach, so I guess the solution is to locate an RV park that is not right on the beach.
  • I just bought a spray can from my automotive store that when sprayed on removes the rust and when dry it leaves a black primer on the metal. So far it works really good.
  • Salt water + iron = rust Flush with fresh water and use rust inhibitor quick.
