rv batteries in tool box ?

I am thinking about getting a side mount truck tool box for the tongue of my trailer. It currently only holds 1 group 24 battery.
I was hoping to fit 2 deep cycle batteries in the box, along with some storage.
I measured one of the boxes, a UWS. The interior depth at the bottom is 6 5/8".
The battery case sizes I see are 6 3/4" or 6 7/8".
Anyone on here hit this problem before, and how did you solve it?
Would a pair of group 22's be any good? Looks like I would lose quite a bit of amp hrs.
Thanks for any input.

  • I've been watching our craigslist for over a year. A couple junky boxes for about $150, vs new for $250.

ROYB I see the toolbox brand name, and by color, I'm guessing you went with Trojan GC2's ?
The tool box's I looked at were about 1/4" too tight to get a battery in. The space measured 6 5/8" exactly, and the batteries, depending on brand seemed to be either 6 3/4, or 6 7/8".
I'll look into your set up.
I was hoping there was a brand of box, and battery, that would work.
    Thanks.
I just noticed, the pic with the brand name is a stock photo.
Any idea how I could get more info on the install you had pics of?
  • And you can find used truck tool boxes on Craigslist.....

I have helped do a couple of 48-inch side mounted tool boxes. I like them because of the small over hang area which is great for dressing up the interior cables and adding a vent hole using a sink drain.

Here are a few photos from the gilldawg79 install.

Perfect size height wise for four each GC2 6VDC batteries... Can add switches and meters etc if you like in the over hang area... The lever lock is alot harder to jimmy to gain entrance. I would also use round stove type bolts on the bottom of the tool box mounting frame with the locking nuts etc on the inside floor area of the tool box. Makes it very hard to grind off and steal your whole battery bank box...

If you only have two GC2 batteries in the bank then the other half can be used for storage of tools etc... I would place a somewhat sealed panel between the two areas so the battery fumes would not do some damage to your tool's surface areas...

The one draw back using this box is some trailers will not have enough room to allow you to open the tool box hinged lid. One of the beauties of the TORKLIFT boxes is their top slides off. Great idea for close quarters... Their boxes comes with optional solar panel as well that can keep your batteries topped off... Another neat idea...

  • I just looked them up, thanks.
@ $550 is a little steep for me.
I was looking at truck boxes in 60" range for about $250.
