In Idaho and Wyoming (maybe in Utah as well but I just arrived and have not bought gas here yet), regular is 85 octane and you pay a premium for 87, usually about a dime gallon more. Got the 87, and given the mountains we are in 85 was not what I wanted, paid 3.79.
The "excuse" for 85 is the altitude factor. But you never see a ten or 12 cent price drop.
87 octane isn't likely to be of any benefit to you in the mountains, but I've never read anything about the potential for long term damage, or not, to engines designed for 87.
On the other hand, we've lived at 9000' for nearly 15 years and seldom operate our vehicles below 6000'. In that time we've driven three 5.4 Fords and the 300 hp 4.6 Northstar (burned the 89 in it, not the 91 called for) and have never had a hint of engine trouble.
As you may know, using a higher octane fuel than the mfr. calls for is a waste of money, does not improve performance, and just makes it a tad harder to start in cold weather due to high-octane gas requiring higher temperature and pressure to ignite.
So with my experiential history I'll go with the octane level available in a given region and save a few bucks. - Desert_CaptainExplorer IIIIn Idaho and Wyoming (maybe in Utah as well but I just arrived and have not bought gas here yet), regular is 85 octane and you pay a premium for 87, usually about a dime gallon more. - cekkkExplorerTomman58, I'm trying to PM you but site is timing out on me. I'll try later.
- SRTExplorerGasoline prices at a few stations has dropped to $3.46 with the highest prices are $3.52. Diesel is mostly $3.89 with the highest at $3.99. Oil is at $104.67 just this instant. Wonder how low prices will get during this "round"?

Well, we are back in Colorado, home to high gas prices. While in AZ we paid as little as 3.299 for 87 octane. Highest I saw was 3.459, but that station is always out of line.
Driving home thru NM we filled twice in the high 3.20s. That was 86 octane.
Entering Colorado, Alamosa prices for lowly 85 octane regular was just under 3.60. Buena Vista is 3.64 & 3.79 per gas buddy. That's more than I was paying for diesel in AZ & NM. And if you want 87 octane, real regular grade, expect to pay at least 12 cents/gal more.
I'm quoting gas as we left the truck in AZ and just drove home in the Expedition.
Going to winter in AZ? Great state for that although the dust does a job on my COPD but son lives in Tucson. Always found fuel chep there as well as food in general. Liked staying in Casa Grande or Tombstone the best. - cekkkExplorerWell, we are back in Colorado, home to high gas prices. While in AZ we paid as little as 3.299 for 87 octane. - SRTExplorerAccording to Gas Buddy this morning more stations have hopped on the $3.48 bandwagon. Just waiting for the next bad thing to happen in the Middle East to temporarily drive up the price. :R
- koda55ExplorerPaid 3.79 for diesel at Sams club in Rockview Fl. today
- Gale_HawkinsExplorerWith the Feds continuing to pump the dollar is down so the effective price of crude is up for those of us in the US as it takes more US dollars to buy a barrel of crude oil. The report our average household income is down by $2600 and millions of more on food stamps and disability rolls may concern OPEC about our future demands for crude and help keep down gas prices but who knows.
It was still $3.18 today which is the lowest I can remember in a long time.
