RV Storage Garage

will be relocating to Oklahoma soon (we hope) to be closer to the Grand babies. plan to buy a property with enough room to allow me to have a separate garage built big enough to store my 35' Bounder in. I've already decided to have electric, water, and sewer hookups built in but I'm wondering what other things I need to have built in at the outset. Also, how can I go about selecting "the right" builder? Thanks.

MINIMUM depth or length should be 50 feet since no coach is longer than 45 feet.
Minimum overhead door clearance should be 14 feet. A 50 foot deep bay would allow the largest coach owner to keep the tow-bar / hitch attached and still be able to walk around the coach, even with the door shut.

I store our coach in a 50x15w - a 20ft wide would be nicer for opening the slides all the way (but i won't pay 100 bucks more per month for the extra 5 feet).

I wouldn't install anything less than 30A service (50a would be nice fi you think folks might stay in the coach / apartment) ;) Water & Sewer would be an added benefit as you've mentioned.

If you build it wide enough you might consider adding a drain to the floor - then you could wash cars or the coach INSIDE the building (and dry them or hose down the concrete floor).

I love having the enclosed/private bay - it means i can work on the coach (change the oil, perform mods) and i don't have to necessarily complete my work and put everything away - i can come back and finish it later (waiting on parts) or when i have time.

Bingo! Now I don't have to spend time writing a response.
  • Paul,

Bury a 3 or 4" pipe from the basement or crawlspace of the house to the barn. I don't know what you will put in it, but you will be glad to have it when you find out. I did that and I didn't find out what I needed it for for another 10 years.

Are you planning on telephone, TV cable and network out there?
See, we're filling it up already.

    Matt

  • And, build it for something bigger than your 35' Bounder. :)
  • I'd probably build something to open the slides if any, a work bench to service parts, a bathroom, definitely a floor drain of sorts... And plenty of lighting,oh and a corner to put a good sized air compressor in. I'm not sure if you need to winterized a rig in OK, but maybe look at insulation to help climate control..
  • get 3 bids, listen to why they think their building is the best. then figure out which one you trust. We have a 30 x 50 16 foot side wall. we had clear panels 2' tall along the to of both long walls. not sure where you ae going to locate in Oklahoma but over in the NE corner area there used to be a barn builder that advertised in papers like the free for sale type of rags Thrifty nickle etc.

Add a bathroom, and make room for anything else you can think of. No need to go short at this time in your life.
