300.00 proctection hanging from the post behind the RV,is theft not a problem?

brakleybeach: I've had the $300 EMS (Progressive) for 5 years now. RVing cross country 5 times (snowbird) and quite a few "local" (5 hours or less) travels every year. Every time I setup...the EMS is used. ("Hanging from the post" as you say)

NEVER a theft problem. In fact, never heard of one. Any "theft" problem mentioned here on the forum is always "I know someone" or "I heard" or "a friend of mine"....never a first hand account.

Well the portable Progressive EMS units do come with a locking bracket but if you're so concerned just locate it at the trailer and run an extension cable out to the power post. Heck, my first one (which happened to be a similar TRC version) I installed inside the camper just as I would a hard wire version. Simple, and avoids any potential for theft entirely.

Nope not a problem and we are on extended trips about 9 months of the year and the other 3 months camping locally in the Sierra's.



If one is in doubt or worried sick about doing this here are 2 things you can do;

1. hard wire inside you rig.

2. take your chances and don't use one at all. Of course that may end up causing more loss of $'s.

Re Theft of portable units..

Most theives love the dark, Well that generally means I am "Home" and I like to leave the A/C on high fan (if not Hi Cool) to mask noises from outside.

If you unplug the box to walk off with it.. I am GOING to wake up and .. Well

(6'2" by 300+ walk with a walking stick aka Quarterstaff and know how to use it)

Most of the pedestals I've encountered have a hole in the lid that lines up with the box allowing for the use of a padlock. Absent this set up a short piece of heavy chain or a cable, with a decent lock, will discourage most thieves but as noted if I am home the immediate loss of AC power is going to get noticed.... and not in a good way. :M

We have a piece of cheap chain with a big lock on ours. Looks a lot more impressive than it is.

assuming I go with the EMS version of either, is there a marketable difference between the PI and TRC products. Camping world has the TRC on sale now.

One of the many differences is that TRC units are warrantied for 1 year and PI units have a Life Time Warranty the hard wired units are field serviceable if any thing goes wrong.

The external display also has a Bypass switch: This switch is located on the remote panel, and allows the user to bypass the computer circuit in the EMS in the event of computer failure, thus allowing source power into the RV. This does not disable the surge protection portion of the EMS.

My experience with a TRC voltage regulator is that the company will not only refuse to repair any of their products once out of warranty but will also refuse to sell replacement parts so one could do the repair themselves. :M I owned an original TRC #34370 EMS / surge protector but sold it in favour of a hard wire Progressive EMS HW-30C with a lifetime warranty. As mentioned, the hard wire versions are field serviceable so all it takes is a phone call to Progressive to identify the problem and parts will be mailed out to you. If your question is whether to choose a TRC or Progressive the answer to me is obvious - Progressive. :B
