- wa8yxmExplorer IIIThere is some truth to his 10 to 1 ration theory.
Membership campgrounds count on the fact that not all members will want a site at the same time. So they "oversell" and as I recall the standard ratio is 10 to one..
Of course when I bought the membership at the park I'm at now I was promised "WE WILL NEVER OVER SELL.. right.. Sure.. Uhha.. Believed them I did not. and as it turns out I was right not to. - 2oldmanExplorer II

That's why so many of them now have 14 day stay limits. Nothing like somebody getting up and going to work to break the ambience of a forest campground.
One reason we found is so many are finding it way cheaper to live in state parks in their RV than to rent an apartment. - K_CharlesExplorerWe never make reservations and always get a spot. Some places save sites for walk ins. Maybe it's because we spend most summer holidays at home.
- goducks10ExplorerWe try and stay away from st parks from June thru August. They seem to fill faster than any other types here in Oregon. Just last week I made a res for an RV park off hwy 58 for this weekend. Probably 7-8 open when I made the res. Then just two days ago I made a res for a FS campground for next Thur-Sunday. We don't have a res for Mon-Thurs but will have no issues finding a spot up in the Cascades. Way more spots than campers during the weekdays. Weekends are still tougher.
IMO it's where and how you want to camp. No doubt things are getting more crowded. 5 years ago we could've just showed up for our Thur-Sunday stay and had an easy pick of most spots. - Grit_dogNavigatorWait til the economy tanks again. Some campsites will open back up...
- OasisbobExplorerThat is true in Oregon. So hard to get a site in most nearby state parks. One reason we found is so many are finding it way cheaper to live in state parks in their RV than to rent an apartment. Last trip we met three families doing this. Who can blame them?
- 2oldmanExplorer IINewbies versus oldies too. I think the fad will wane in a couple years.
Most places I go take reservations, but that doesn't mean you must have one. Dry campgrounds in hot weather are the best bet, Su-Th. People are just too cheap to run their generators very long. - ScottGNomadI'm sure your right.
Fortunately, lots of people buy RV's and only use them a few times a year. When the "new" wears off they sit and languish. - Two_HandsExplorerSame in California!
- LwiddisExplorer III don't venture forth much in June, July and August...but I am now...because of the crowds. Other months are great!
