(I'm sorry I should have clarified that the cooler is on the house not the 5er.)
Our "swamp cooler" is installed on the side of the house near the eaves. He was using a 6' or 7' stand alone, step ladder to unstrap the cover. I was standing beside him, pulling the straps off as he got them untied. I looked over and saw the leg just buckle. Like your knee bends but the wrong direction. He fell to the side - I thought his chest had hit the legs of the ladder but he missed them by inches. He went down one direction and the top of the ladder went the other. The top of the ladder went through a window protector (used here in the north to help keep snow from building up in the basement window wells) looks like a big plastic bubble. Thank goodness he landed on the lawn or I'm sure he would have been hurt a lot worse....or if he had hit that fence face first! Cringe!
We have never seen any problems with that ladder. Don't know how it buckled like it did. Our deck was being refinished and the guys working on it said they heard a loud crash but when we walked calmly around the house, they didn't think anyone was hurt. By the time we got home from the hospital, those very nice men had cleaned up all the breakage from the window protector, and disposed of the ladder. The head man told us later it was "toast" and they didn't want to leave all the mess for us to clean up. Also, found out they finished uncovering the cooler for us! So nice of them.
We are getting a second opinion tomorrow as to the treatment, his stitches came out weeks ago, and the cut is totally healed. We want to find out if the healing of the break can be handled differently/quicker. Never hurts to get a second opinion.
Thank you all for your responses. It's nice to have friends here.
