NO sales or use tax, except for a couple of towns which have local option sales taxes, mostly in ski areas.
NO tire or battery fees on vehicles, just when you buy new tires or batteries.
PERMANENT registration on all boats, motorcycles, trailers (any size or type), street-legal ATVs, and vehicles 11 years old or older.

Montana is a beautiful state and is not responsible for people wanting to register their vehicles there. It is the oppressive tax structure of other states that are the problem. Why would people go out of their way to register a vehicle in a state with low, or no, sales taxes? Simple, to save money. For those states that are loosing money, maybe they should look at making their tax structure more "fair". No, that wouldn't be the government way. After all, they are "here to help you". LOL

I am glad you are happy in Montana and while it’s a great state, there may be other reasons that contribute to those nice tax benefits you site…

Montana, the state that supports, encourages, aids and abets sales tax evasion due to other states for their own benefit…

Montana, consistently one of the top ten states spending more federal dollars than they collect… BTW those dollars come from places like Florida, New York, California and others… without them your tax picture might look different to…

So please spare me the aghast about other states taxes while gloating about yours and enjoy what you have before they are gone… no one likes paying taxes anywhere…

You'd take the (Purchase price - trade in amount) + service charge = x amount. The x amount is how your sales tax will be determined. Then you have your tag/title registration cost approx $250.00 any leftover will be or should be refunded to you.

if the vehicle your using as a trade-in is still being paid for, and you have a balance after the trade-in amt (ex. outstanding bal $25000/trade in allowance $15000), then you'd add the $5000 along with tag/title/reg cost to x amount.

never heard the tire/battery tax, but have heard tire/battery admin type cost where dealer cost you to fill tires, charge battery and so on. a scam i think.

My question is, Gov. Snyder said it was for new cars. Don't know if it covers RV's or not.

This is correct, except in the cases where you want to register it in another state rathert than Florida. South Dakota, Montana, and of course Oregon are far less costs involved when paying the sales tax if any. The trade-in amount is deducted from the negotiated, pre-sales price of the unit being bought. About doc feesA? Those can be negotiated back into the difference you're paying by the selling dealer. It simply involves some accountibg on their end on their paperwork. Don't buy the arguement that is is the clerical fee. Don't be fooled, it's all profit to the dealer, so sack it to them being responsible for paying their own clerical fees.

In regard to Florida's tire and battery fees. The state levies a fee of $1.00 per tire and $1.50 per battery on any new vehicle sold within the state. This also applies when replacing a tire or battery. It is considered an impact fee, rather than a disposal fee. A dealer or parts depot that replaces a tire or battery on a vehicle still has to pay a recycling fee to dispose of the old tire or battery, separate from the "impact fees" collected from the customer.
