Scared of the wind

I have been towing fifth wheels for about 13yrs & never was concerned but I now know of two ppl who lost their rigs when blown over by the wind. Anyone know what kind of wind gust it takes to do that?
  • If you can feel the wind that much stop at the next exit and call it a day. It's not worth driving in it.

    X2

I have driven along the Oregon Coast in strong winds and just don't feel them.
  • Towng a TT you can feel the wind depending on the size of the tow vehicle. In a MH you really feel the wind because you feel it first hand rocking and rollng. Towing a 5ver you feel almost nothing. The 5ver is rocking and rolling and the tow vehicle rides like no wind at all. This becomes a problem. In WY I have seen them ripped off their hitch. The good thing is they normally don't take the truck with them when they go.
  • It would vary by circumstance. If you are towing at 60mph and have a strong cross wind and turn sharp with the wind hitting on the inside of the turn you're more vulnerable than if the wind is hitting on the outside of the turn. I have held my TT steady in 60mph crosswinds. I have had it parked with the stabilizing jacks down in 60mph winds. I don't let it rock in the wind. I have gone through 4 hurricanes with winds topping 90mph. I keep the TT hitched to my truck and face it into the wind. No damage. Yes, I did once have to turn it around after the eye passed. The other three the storm was not centered over us so the eye didn't pass so the wind went in only one direction. Also, I think 5th wheels are more vulnerable because they are higher and the wind can create more lift under the front.
