Scheduled for knee arthroscopy next week

Don't really want to, but it's time. I've been babying this stupid knee for almost a year now. I actually was scheduled back in July, but I did about 14 weeks of PT and got it better. Since then I have injured it 4 times, including a fall down the stairs that probably finished it off. Every time we go camping I come back with an injury.

I had an MRI about 2 weeks ago that revealed a severe complex meniscus tear radiating in every direction. It's roughing up the end of the femur bone. Drat! The arthritis isn't bad enough to warrant a knee replacement. Hopefully, this arthroscopy will fix it up. DH had one about 15 years ago and hasn't had a complaint since.

If you had an arthroscopy, how bad did it hurt and how soon were you functional again.
  • Had the orthascopic surgery. Then took the series of shots. One a week for 6 weeks. Then replacement knee. Now I am finally off pain meds.

Just had right knee arthroscopic surgery this past Thursday to repair cartilage and also had holes drilled in the bone to improve blood circulation.

Walked out of the hospital the same day with no crutches and did not have to take any meds at all. Sunday afternoon, walked (slowly) 1 km around a local lake (flat, soft trail.) Yesterday, 15 minutes on the bike trainer. Today, 95% of swelling is gone and knee is about 85% functional. Still need to stay away from deep knee bends and going down stairs is a bit slow.

In order to prepare for the surgery, I spent the last 4 months x once per day on the bike trainer in intermediate pedaling (80-90 rpm,) building up the muscles on the lower thighs and around the knee area which I have attributed to the very fast recovery path. As for the bike training, I am a long time cyclist and shifting indoors to a bike trainer was an easy transition. Also age is factor (I am 49 years.) As everyone is different, your post up surgery results will vary as compared to mine or others.

Off to the Orthopedic Surgeon next week for a follow up and will be booking to have the left knee done as soon as possible.

Well, that's encouraging. My ortho says that if it's a simple cleanup and repair i'll be non-weight-bearing for 2 days. But if he has to do that hole puncturing(micro-fracturing, perhaps??) i'll be non-weight-bearing for 2 weeks. He'll probably order PT afterward--he's a big believer in PT and so am I.

I've been going to the YMCA 3-4 times a week and doing the recumbent bike a couple of miles. Walking the treadmill is not working out so well because of the severe arthritis in my foot. I'd love it if e could do something similar in the foot, but what I know of THAT surgery scares the bejeezus out of me. I'd have to be walking on my hands and knees before I'd have the foot done!

I,ve had them both scoped ,a walk in the park home same day , cruising around on a crutch for about a week , then just walking stiff , you,ll be moving about loosening it back up, bet in three weeks you could go camping. feels a bit num but pains gone. scale of one to ten a 4.

I hope so, because I'm hosting a rally the first weekend in March! :B

  • I had one knee done in April, the other in May, 2010. I don't think my tear was as bad as yours is. They gave me a machine that sent ice water to a wrap I put around knee. That really helped. I walked on it when I got home. I had physical therapy for a few weeks.

The doctor also said he removed some arthritis, too.
He said stairs are my enemy. When in pain, ice is my friend.
I don't remember any great pain, but everybody is different.
I was able to walk around the Taste of Chicago in late june of that year for 6 hours, with no problem.

    Good luck to you.
  • I had my knee 'scoped' and the Doctor cleaned up some rough edges.
My problem was osteoarthritis. The surgery gave me a couple more years but, the knee finally wore out.

I had it replaced three years ago and have had no problems or pain since the replacement.

When my other knee goes, I won't hesitate to have it replaced.
Hopefully the surgery will take care of your problem and you won't have to have a TKR.
  • Everyone is different.
    Don't remember the details.
To speed up recovery, do all of the physical therapy!
    Pat
  • Had it done 3 times over the years. Swelling and discomfort for about 4 weeks. No physical therapy was prescribed. The knee replacement was a whole different story.
