My approach has been if it's out of sight it is out of mind. A safe is telling a thief that this has valuable items inside and worth prying out and hauling away. Pull a drawer and the space below it is good for truly important items like travel documents. I like the containers that look like a can of shaving cream for items like keys. I would not want a thief to do $1000 in damage ripping a $200 safe out to get to a few hundred dollars worth of stuff.
My camera gear is insured and I backup my picture files to a netbook and hide the netbook and the flash cards I keep on my person. The netbooks are the one item we usually want to put in a hotel safe but most of the time they will not fit inside.
I avoid areas where break-ins are likely as much as possible, like parking lots at trailheads or beaches where thieves know you will not be back for hours.
