When I went full time I researched carrying till I was blue in the face. My gun instructor advised not doing it.
The laws from state to state vary so vastly it's just foolish to try it. Simply put if you carry a handgun and travel across the states RV'ing you won't be legal in many of them.

Everyone, especially a potential crook, knows what a pump shotgun sounds like when a round is loaded
X2. I ended up carrying a long gun on my journey as a full timer. Never had to shoot it, but did have to pump it twice. Glad I had it in the MH.
It is most certainly not paranoid fear to carry a gun, it's being prudent to be safe in case of an emergency. Just like anything else in life. Not everyone is as nice or as honest as you are.
