I-10 between orlando and california and oregon was my commute for a couple of years and there is no way I would stay in a rest area overnight from texas to LA. Just as with campgrounds, you need to be just a little selective over where you stay.
That said, I'm pretty sure the number of unsavoury folks just within walking distance of a Wally Mart far exceeds those on an Interstate.
But I'm jus' sayin's all............
