I think a starting point would be doing all the math on what your 1/2 ton truck can safely tow, don't overlook the max payload and never ask an rv dealer "can my truck tow this?" 
If you find a trailer that you love, can picture using for many years to come and fits into your trucks towing parameters, go for it. If you find yourselves yearning for larger models that your current truck can/should be towing, why not wait a few years, get your moneys worth out of your current setup and purchase the dream combination when your kiddos are a little bigger and you NEED the space.
