Should I replace my brake control?

I just had the Prodigy P2 installed today. I only drive about 10 miles with it today, but it's way nicer than what I had.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'm going to go with the P2. For some reason I thought they were more expensive.

The previous owner installed the current brake control and he was a hack, so I'll need to check out what he did this weekend. Hopefully he didn't leave a birds nest of wires there for me. I've been finding & fixing his messes for the past few years.

I think you answered your own question. For the modest amount of money for a new quality controller, go for it.

It IS a time based unit. Anytime you see "solid state" in terms of a brake control it is a time based unit. Simply a fact.

I have two time based brake controllers in the cabinent and have them ONLY for back up's. (time based trailer brakes are much better than NO trailer brakes)

I am about to install a proportional Draw Tite intella stop brake controller on my Minivan. This is a re-branded Tekonsha Prodigy.

I have had great experiences with the proportional brake controls from Tekonsha in the past and believe that you will be well served by them as well.

You can get a p2 or a p3. They both do the same thing and have the same internals. The P3 has a different display but the two controls are functionally similar.

You could even go for a Primus IQ which functions the same as a P2 and P3 it just doesn't have the electric over hydraulic function

What I look forward too is the boost function on this controller. Basically I can set the trailer brakes to be more or less aggressive when I first hit the Tow Vehicles brakes.

On Edit I went over to Amazon and found that Draw-Tite has a rebranded Tekonsha Primus IQ called the I-Stop IQ currently for only $79.00. Don't worry about the label, this brake controller is a Tekonsha with a different Label. This one has the same inner workings as a Prodigy, it even has the boost features. Here is a link.

That behavior sounds like timer based. Their problem is they always put they ramp the current up at the same rate. That may work okay for normal consistent braking, but what about when you need to stop quickly, like in an emergency situation? The trailer brakes lag significantly. I highly recommend an inertial based proportional one instead.

If you haven't yet, give it a try and see how you like it.

Never heard of that controller. Even the mfg website doesn't say if it's time based or inertia based (better). Get a Tekonsha Prodigy and be done with it.

Let me turn this around on you: Do you have any concerns with the current unit?

Is there something about it that you don't like? Do you feel it is not doing its job?

Either of the Tekonsha Prodigy controllers, the original (P2) or the P3, are excellent values for the money, effective, and drop-dead simple to operate.
