Sirius/XM

My free six month trial period with Sirius on the new truck ended last month. Not a huge deal. This truck gets driven far less than my work truck. But this year we plan to do some serious camping trips with our new toy hauler.

Sirius/XM is not a must for us. Most of the songs are boring but when you have that many stations, you can usually find something you like by channel surfing. Once in a blue moon, Laugh USA will even have someone really funny on there. For long trips, its also nice not having to hunt for new stations every hour or so.

I am surprised I haven't heard from Sirius yet about signing up. I probably would if the price was really cheap. I don't mean to sound cheap but when a particular vehicle is known to sit parked for over a week, it doesn't make sense to spend much money on something I may only use a time or two each month.

What's everyone else paying for Sirius if you don't mind my asking?

  • I pay $9.99 a month for the a-la-carte package that let me pick 50 stations. One of them is the Blue Collar Comedy channel which is a premium channel so that cost a little extra. If not for that one premium channel I think it would be around $8.99 per month.
  • If you still have the service you may want to check your CC for a auto charge! I'm at $25 for six months on a single vehicle (Jeep). I'm the same with my Jeep being a weekend only vehicle, but it's nice to have the option of all those channels!
  • If your trial expired, wait. XM will send you teaser renewal offers soon. As low as $15 for 3 months. They will also deal if you call them. Just tell them you are on the fence about renewing and get plenty of music on Pandora and such.
  • When they do start bugging you, they will offer all kinds of "discounts" --LOL We always let our subscription expire and then when the game begins, we get another year of the "everything" included packages for less than $100 a year. This year I paid $85 for the annual package, which expires in another 3 weeks. Sometime in April or May, they will actually turn the system off and start the game. It's all how you want to play the game.
  • We have Sirius in 2 vehicles. We have the minimum, which is still way more than we can ever listen to. The combined cost with tax and all is $28 a month or $14 a vehicle. That's tax and everything.

I think the actual cost is a little over $10 a vehicle for the minimum, then add tax and everything and it comes out to about $14 per vehicle. I have both vehicles set on all those country stations. I listen almost 99% of the time to Bluegrass (XM 61).

Because you let your original subscription expire, you'll need to pay a new activation fee. I work from home about 50% of the time and my wife works from home almost 100% of the time now. So we don't drive very much any more. But, when traveling, vacations, and when we do use the vehicles, it sure is nice! Most everything on over-the-air radio is pretty much garbage in my opinion, especially today's country music. That's why I like the Bluegrass stations so much! It reminds me of country, when "country" was still "country music!"

If you re-activate your subscription, they will try to sell you another subscription for their Sirius stand alone radio you can put in your house. It's also the same price as your automobile, and I think they give you the radio, or it's really cheap. That's something might be worth getting if you really like Sirius. You can take the radio anywhere, even camping, and enjoy it in your camper too.

Also, there is no contract. It's a month-to-month subscription. If you don't pay, they turn you off. Simple!
  • We have used XM for many years now. Key for us is to have a portable unit that can be moved among vehicles and even the house.

My wife loves to listen to the baseball game at the campfire so we rig up an extension from the RV.

Yes - we don't use it constantly but the value during a camping trips is worth the price.
  • We pay $10/month for the "Mostly Music" package on two receivers. We move one of the receivers between two vehicles depending on which one is in regular use at the time. The other other receiver is a factory installed radio.
