Sleep Number Mattress Questions

We are considering purchasing a Sleep Number mattress from Camping World since they currently have them on sale for $800. I know you have to allow for altitude differences but am wondering if once you get to your site and get the pressure set right do you need electrical power. We dry camp a lot in national parks with a generator when needed for recharging the battery but would not want to need ac power all the time. Also have you been happy with the RV version(short queen)?

Thanks;

Dick

  • We have one in our coach. Inflated to the right pressure at about a thousand feet above sea level. Drove to the Black Hills the first time (slightly over 5000 ft) and it was like laying on the floor. If you are heading up in altitude, lower the pressure to zero first.

    When we bought our coach new it came with a sleep number mattress. I liked it, my CEO/Navigator did not. The longer we used it the more I agreed with her. We roll to the middle, we have tried numerous different settings, but cannot find one that is comfortable for either of us. We would not buy another.

    I would think twice about a sleep number. I completely agree with this poster. You literally roll to the middle. I have had one in my home for nearly a year and it was one of the worst purchases of my life. Haven't had a good day sleep in a year.
  • We love ours. Closest thing to the waterbed we slept in for 34 years when we had a house. It is also handy to adjust. One night I want it a little towards the firm side, other nights no. Just push a button.

    My wife has it her side much softer than I do, and the individual adjustment of each side is another nice feature.

    You will need 120v to set the pressure once you arrive, if you lowered it when gaining elevation. Once it is set, you don't have to use the pump, (or electricity) again. It will hold the setting for weeks without a problem.

    Happy Camping
  • We have one at home, and had one in our previous MH. It only needed electrical power for adjustments to the pressure. Once it was set, it stayed at the set pressure just fine, unless there was a leak which is a whole different issue.
    We dry camped often and had no trouble using the bed.

    Get an inverter.

    I considered that but prefer not to add more 12V power draw since we do nicely with a single high quality (Trojan SCS 200) 12V battery. I do carry a small 100W inverter for emergency situations but have used it only once in 10 years. I need to know if there is any reason the mattress needs ac power all the time after you get the pressure set.
