- down_homeExplorer IIRat Snakes around here are generally black pattern, cream or whit underneath.
You can walk right up to them or at least some of the time. They let a stink to get you to leave them alone, sometimes. We had two on seperate occasions, over the basement doorway and the front door.
We think they smelled Daughter's Guinea Pig. The one over the basement door was at least twelve foot long. It was from the ground up over the 30 in door and nearly to the ground with it's head. I walked right up to it, in the grass a few minutes later. I know they don't say they get that big.
Black Racers will chase you no matter how big you are. The things are fast. I never had one to bite me but it came right up to my feet. I picked up a stick and it ran/crawled away. Darned things are too fast, when it is warm anyway, to try to grab it.
Trout fishing in Middle Tn I watche a huge black snake, of undetermined species, fall from a cliff top about 40 ft maybe. It landed, with a giant kerplat, flat on it's belly. It was near big around as my leg and way longer than my body. It crawled, somewhat slowly between rock seams.
There are lots of snakes out there that don't seem to be identified. One was a beautiful almost day glow green with light green belly, arrow shaped head and about three feet long but slender. Son picked it up and it curled around his wrist and forearm. We studied it for a while. never showed any aggression or alarm. We let go on a small sapling on the fence line. It disappeared into the foliage. Only thing on net I found was vine snake supposedly poisonous...but this is North America. - Dave_and_SueExplorerMy DW thinks all snakes are rattleheadedcoppermocassins.Never any around or on that I have seen.Wont have to worry any way til spring.Too cold.
- wifExplorerOOOHH, I'm SOOO glad there are no snakes here in Newfoundland!! HATE the sight of the buggers!
- pa_travelerExplorerAs long as they don't poke there head out of the toilet im okay with them.
- traindriver1ExplorerNever had a problem with the camper, but got next to a rattler the wheelwell of a B-52 once.
- RGar974417ExplorerWe were camping near Gettysburg about 20 years ago. I was sitting in a beach chair and the biggest black snake i ever saw came by about 4ft away from me.If he had come under the chair I would have gone through the awning.I read some where that snakes didn't like the smell of moth balls. We went to Walmart and bought the biggest can of moth balls we could find and put them all around the camper. We never saw the snake again.
- gboppExplorerIf my DW saw a snake in the Southwind, we'd be buying a new RV.

No, but thanks for putting that thought in my mind. I'm deathly afraid of snakes. Venomous or not, they're all deadly to me. I've always believed that if I stepped on a lion's paw, I deserve anything I get because I was warned, but I could accidently step on a snake with no malice in my heart and still get bit. Now I'll spend the rest of the day looking up and down every time I take a step. :)
There is something 'evil' about a critter that can move so fast WITHOUT legs/feet SSSSSsssssssssss - More_To_SeeExplorerI was working under the rig one time and saw a snake up above me slithering along. Even though I was pretty sure it wasn't a rattler I still knocked off for the day. From my experience those guys just want to be left alone and that's the way I treat them.
Now if you want to talk about mice I'm getting real tired of dropping the gas tank and pulling the generator to repair damage from those critters.
I'll take a nice friendly rattler anytime. - RoyBExplorer IIWe was tent camping at OtterCreek next to a stream up on the Blue Ridge. I went to the truck to get something and coming back I noticed a snake under momabears folding chair she was sitting in.
So I just casually said theres a snake under your chair and she jumps up on top of the chair. Even that was a sight to see someone standing on a fold up chair.
We always have a walking cane big stick close by so I grabbed it and flipped the snake close to the creek. Then walked up on him and flipped him into the creek.
I was afraid he would get under the tent floor... Guess it was too cool that evening as the snake was not getting into any big hurry to get away from us... Never saw him again the next few days we was there...
