Speeding in campgrounds

Does anyone else get frustrated by the fact that some people (more than you would think) completely ignore the speed limits set within campground areas? Some are 5mph, some are up to 15mph. I try to relax when I go camping, but sometimes it is hard to do that when you feel like a traffic cop as cars rip by you. Most of them are not towing mind you, but those instances occur as well. Most places my family and I go are children oriented. They ride bikes, run around and play with friends. There are lots of blind intersections where a child or even an adult could risk getting hit by one of these maniacs. I lost my voice at Yogi bears Java Jellystone over July 4th from yelling "slow down" so many times. Maybe I am overreacting, but last time I checked, 5mph was almost walking speed or a extremely slow jog. These so called campers acted like they were driving in nascar or the autobahn. Some of the people were simply going from site to site in their car instead of walking (big park) and my real question is what is the rush? Of course at Jellystone the teenage employees of the campground were not exactly setting a good example by hauling around in their gators, tractors and golf carts at well over the 5mph speed limit. I was not the only one who felt this way during these weekends but obviously some people disregard safety in order to save 30 seconds as with the regular roads. Rant over.

  • I guess I will never understand some people. Always in a hurry to get to the same red light but got there 10 second earlier than me. I laugh in those situations. But in all seriousness, they drive dangerously and it could affect others lives. Guess I need to find a plot of land and plop my camper there. No roads to speed on...

X2 I will do 10 mph, not 5. My car is a pita to stay at 5mph for a long stretch. The dogs in the CG,s have more respect than the kids. What I see is parents or grandparents setting the kids free to do whatever.
  • I've noticed in general, campers like to speed like a lot of other drivers. It makes no difference to them that they're in a congested area with potentially a lot of jump-out targets.

Same could be said about drivers that race down the rows in crowded parking lots at shopping centers, or worse the ones that save a few seconds by cutting across rows driving between parked cars rather than the 100 extra feet to get to the end of the row.

I've gotten honked at for driving too slow through a campground, and had people actually pass me by driving through camp sites. I pretty much don't need to use the gas pedal in a campground, idle speed on my truck is 7-9 mph and that's more than enough.

Lots of folks in a hurry I guess, maybe due to poor planning, or work/family related stress, or just plain stupid?
  • I definitely agree, CG speeding is one of my all-time pet peeves as there is no, none, nada, zip excuse for it. Twice in my life I have witnessed a child being struck by a car and that is something you will never forget. On our last trip up to Big Lake in the White mountains last June it was particularly bad. We had taken a site right in the middle of the CG and it had an inordinate amount of high speed traffic. I will never put us on a major access road again (if I can help it as It seemed better on the outer loops).

I complained to the hosts who just threw up their hands saying there was nothing they could do. I suggested calling in the Ranger or local Sheriff but I guess they just did not want to be bothered.

IMHO: A simple, polite warning for the first offense followed by expulsion (without a refund), if it happened again would go a long way towards solving the problem.

    :M
  • Problems at a destination resort area (RV Park) over the 4th of July?

"I try to relax when I go camping"

I think I see the problem right there. ;)
