they are suposed to be off center, usaly looks like a "D" shape in the knob and then the post that sticks out is a corosponding "D" shape. Could be another shape, but the most common is a "D" shape if the knob is broken out then you need to order a new one or go to a hard ware store that carries apliance accesories, or a junk yard and pull one off a different appliance that has the right one

I’d hope they could discern square peg round hole type things. I think they mean the shaft coming out from the control valve or whatever it’s hooked to is right against the front panel of the washer and sopping the knob from going all the way on.

could be, I think that would be more obvious and cause you to call a repair man or open it up and see why its all bent over though..
but they did say in the post if they could just get a new knob it would work, which leads me to suspect the inside of the knob is broken and pushed off center.
