I set the point on top of what looked like a good spot.. Gave it a couple of gentle taps to set it, oh, perhaps a quarter to half inch into the log, Stepped back and took a good "Manley" swing of the 8 pounder.. It went in much farther.
I took another wack and the point of the wedge was lodged in the dirt UNDER the freshly split log.
IF you are going to split a lot of wood.. Get a pointed wedge.

On the last link, if your wedge is "Mushroomed" like the one on the bottom you need to have a machinest grind it back to the way the top one looks.. A mushroomed wedge or chisel is dangerous.
Oh my, um,,no. My borrowed wedge was not only mushroomed it was mushroomed crookedly. I quickly learned why. The cutting edge is also crocked and it always goes into the firewood on a angle. I had to keep reposition myself to hit it right to try and straighten it out. Sometimes I had to knock it back out of the wood and start over. Have I mentioned that I'm a weakling and I was basically just bumping the wedge through the wood. lol That's why my friends got a kick out of my facebook post. You have to know me to get it. I still had a good workout though and would like to do more. Not, in a life saving type condition. Just for fun. I put the old bent, crooked, wedge and sledge hammer in my pickup. Just in case I have to do this sort of thing at the park and impress the ladies.
