I must think different that most folks as I like to keep thing simple. I already have a 7500 watt generator in the MH and I keep it full of fuel (100 gallon) so that is one option. I think I will pickup a Honda 2000 watt and a 5 gallon extended run tank. A couple more 5 gallon cans would run a long time. I can always keep the gas fresh by putting it in the Jeep. The Honda will run the blower on my central heat and the fridge. Heating, cooking and hot water are NG. That is all I have to have in an emergency. I have battery powered lights that run off of the Dewalt 18 volt batteries. I can also keep those charged with the small Honda.
If the power is off in the summer I will just run the MH generator and stay in the MH.
I could also use the Honda when we boondock in the NF to charge the MH batteries so I don't have to run the big generator.
I guess the two things I will offer to your comments....
1) In 2007 (prior to me buying the standby), we had an ice storm that took out our power for 4-5 days. And we were lucky. A good portion of the state was 10-15 days.
Our outside air temp during this period was single digit lows and low to mid 20s for the day-time highs.
I had a toyhauler at the time with Onan 5500 and my fueling station was full (60 gallons unleaded)... About the 3rd or 4th day I was close to running out of fuel and ventured out to find gasoline.
I drove around for more than 1-1/2 hours before I found a gas station with power to run it's pumps. Then I waited in the massive line for another hour before it was my turn.
2) I travel occasionally for work. One time I was out of town when a different ice storm hit.
I didn't want my wife to have to deal with hooking anything up. Wanted to all be automatic.
Like you said, different strokes... Everyone has to assess their own risk potential.

Hi Solid,
I don't have a standby generator. I do have a friend who does--and the answer to your questions is yes in both cases. However, his is older technology and has been in service for over ten years.
Good to know. I suspect most models in the recent past have recommendations/charging equip built in like mine.
