A lot of the response worry about AC. In the north we have to worry about heat. When it's in single digits it will not take long for everything to freeze. Living in motorhome is not a option.
We have lived in our home for over 40 years. Have seen stretches of up to a week without power. For many years we had a Large generator to give us power. Pouring 10 gallons of gas everyday gets old fast. In MI natural gas is stored underground. Many pipe lines around. Pumping station are self powered by there own NG. That why we have good reliable delivery of NG. Using NG up here is a very good decision.
When our generator was installed. The first item checked gas meter size. Then electrical demand was checked. Ended up having main circuit breaker box replaced.
Cycling of generator every week needs to be done. My system also cycles the transfer switch.
There are many place that will install a home standby generator. But many will not check all the systems to insure that it will provide the power when you need it.
