Even in the dead of winter going on the ice is a risk. You better know the lake very well. In northern Michigan the lake I grew up on had a current near a dam on the lake. Even in the coldest of winters it was not save to drive a vehicle or even a snowmobile anywhere near the dam. Have seen many people go in the lake during the winter as they did not now that this area never froze.
