I grew up in WI and they plowed parking lots on the ice for fishing jamborees. My dad a a buddy built the first gas power auger I had ever seen with a V shaft Briggs mounted to a wash machine agitater turned upside down. I would drill holes where you wanted 3 for buck. Dad also taught me how to drive on icy roads on a frozen lake. Never lake Michigan but smaller in land lakes and ice was 36" thick or more, stay away from the ice heaves, where the two sides freeze and meet in the middle, it's thin ice.
