Strangest thing asked to borrow

What is the strangest thing a fellow camper has asked to borrow from you?

I had to chuckle this past weekend when a tenting family set up to us. Very disorganized and every time they opened a door on their van you could hear pots, pans or something else falling out on the ground.

We had our evening fire going when the neighbor lady came over and asked to "borrow some fire". I chuckled and asked how she was going to transport it and if she was going to return it. She had a blank look and said "I didn't think of that", "we left our matches and paper to start a fire at home". They were a very nice family and I took some fire starters and igniter over to them along with a couple nice pieces of dry wood. Certainly felt for them as the weekend was a wet one.
  • Funny that this topic came up.....over Memorial Day weekend we were camping with friends - who had all been out camping prior to Memorial Day so they had already done their "let's see what we forgot run" :S- DH and I live in the North Country of New York and we are lucky to see the snow gone by Memorial day, which is always our first trip out - well anyway - my girlfriend came knocking on the door and asked to borrow a bottle of Jack Daniels (she and my DH drink Uncle Jack and Pepsi) - I laughed as I made sure DH had enough for the weekend and thought better pack another bottle just to be safe - gave her the JD - she later came back and raided the frdge for Pepsi and ice to go with her "borrowed" Jack!:p
  • I do not smoke anymore. But, I used to be asked to “borrow” a cigarette. Now, if I wanted to be cute I should have asked when are you going to return it? Or, when you are done with it I want it back.
Thinking back on it, that was the most stupid way to ask for a smoke.
  • A couple of women asked to borrow a corkscrew and when I showed it to them they told me "that kind doesn't work".

It's the lever action corkscrew used by most somalias (wine stewards), so I showed them how easy it was to use it if you know how.
  • Mmmm
    Nothing actually.

We did give an old Coleman generator to an older couple at MacKerricher SP some years ago.
They were asking about our new Honda EM1000.
I happened to have the Coleman with us, (which I hated) offered it and they accepted.

That was the loudest contraption ever built.
  • Tums. Actually it was on a rafting trip. Another guide pulled his boat up next to mine and told me he had the worst indigestion all day and was desperate for relief. I always packed along a first aid kit that was basically a portable emergency room, but during all my rafting days that was the one and only time I ever needed it, thank God.

    Miles
  • The only thing someone asked to borrow was a can opener. So, I let them borrow ours. They returned a few minutes later, it broke on them. Well, it was old. So I let them have a 'church key'. Wouldn't be as elegant, but would work.
  • The lot in back of our seasonal lot the guy gets up real early. When he wants to call it quits at his lot he loads up his wheel barrow with his campfire and brings it over to our fire pit.
