Suggestions for tripple towing ATV trailer behind camper....

I’m thinking about “Triple towing” my small ATV trailer behind my 19ft tandem axle camper….being pulled by my ½ ton Dodge Ram Hem Quadcab. I hooked everything up and took it for a test run the other night…..towing it about 60mph on some side roads just to test it out. It seemed to pull just fine, except that any little wobble in the camper, would get the little atv trailer acting pretty sketchy…not dangerous, but definitely moving back and forth more than I would like.

I tightened up the single sway control brake on the camper hitch as much as I could, and that made a really big improvement.
I went ahead and ordered another sway control brake since they are pretty cheap…but I’m wondering if I should put the second sway control brake between the truck and the camper to make it a dual brake setup…….or put it between the camper and the atv trailer. I’m thinking that as long as the camper doesn’t move, the atv trailer won’t move….so I’m probably better off to add the second sway control brake between the truck and the camper.

I’m assuming I want to have a decent amount of tongue weight on the ATV trailer? I’m planning on filling the fresh water tank in the front of the camper to compensate for the extra weight on the rear.
Thoughts? Ideas? Tips for triple towing?

Oh, and in MO this is legal with a bumper pull camper….as long as the total overall length isn’t over 55ft long….I’m around 50ft total.

Gotta ask...why don't you put the ATV in the back of your truck? We use to put our 350 Honda Rancher in the back of our Tundra and then pull our 25 foot, 5500 lb travel trailer. Truck was right at it's max payload capacity, but with extra air bags, rear anti-roll bar and E rated LT tires, it handled really good.

As imq707s pointed out, having more than a single ATV makes the problem a lot more difficult to deal with. Even having a toy hauler RV trailer means you won't be able to transport two ATVs to a staging area if you can't ride to the trailhead.

Another solution to this problem, and yes, I was faced with this exact issue, is to look into something like a DiamondBack ATV Tonneau cover that can support two ATVs so long as you don't exceed the 1600 lbs load capacity. However, that puts almost all 1/2 ton trucks overloaded if you want to additionally pull a TT. I am fortunate enough to already have a 1 ton truck so I do have the payload for two ATVs on my DiamondBack ATV cover and pull my 9500 GVWR non-toy hauler TT.

There are many places I like to go to where I would not be able to double-tow and I just don't want to do that anyway. The DiamondBack is the perfect solution for me. I know I sound like an advertisement for them but I can assure you I have no financial gain or connection to DiamondBack.
  • I actually have two atvs that go on the trailer.

Sorry....I've seen it called triple towing on a bunch of websites, so that's what I called it. Didnt make sense to me either why they called it that.
  • Sounds like you've thought this out real good. Gotta ask...why don't you put the ATV in the back of your truck? Good luck

PS... Wouldn't that be "double towing"? You wouldn't be pulling three vehicles...only two.
  • You don't count the tow vehicle, so double tow. Sounds like you don't have enough hitch weight on the little trailer. I've towed double for approximately 45,000 miles over the years without a problem. I have about 150 lb hitch weight, see my profile.
  • Illegal in NY also, with NO reciprocal allowances be from out of state. I saw a triple pulled over at the first toll barrier entering NY.

I'm surprised the weight police haven't been out, pulling a triple with a half toner.

This chart shows MO can be up to 65', but best to confirm with your local laws versus something "on the internet". onlinetowingguide.com - State Towing Laws (make sure to scroll all the way to the right on that linked table)

But yes, you will want good tongue weight on that ATV trailer and that goes for even just towing that ATV trailer independently with your truck.
